My whinge of the day: boy! I finished reading Antonia White’s ‘The Glass House/Beyond the Glass’ etc quartet last night, and couldn’t stop bawling for the last quarter of the final book. Bloody hell!! Apart from the immensely powerful and compelling description of ‘insanity’, the description of Clara’s ‘treatment’ (such as it was, because no-one seemed to have even bothered asking her what was happening) is all the more powerful for the author’s and characters’ seeming acceptance of the treatment of ‘the insane’. However, it’s inspired me to find out more about Antonia White, cos I’m curious about her life (a lot of the story was based on her own life); and to explore narratives of madness – as long as I don’t get too involved.
